In this Catalog Page I would like to list major treasures of the Malbork
castle, which in my opinion are worth to be seen by every visitor.
The Malbork castle is so old, and contains so many unique architecture
features, objects, pieces of art, and museum exhibits, that practically
everything in it represents a real treasure for humanity. Unfortunately
a complete descriptions of all these treasures
would take a huge volume. Therefore I decided to list on this web page
only the most prominent out of them, which I personally believe every
visitor should see.

1. One of the largest medieval fortifications in the Northern Europe:
The Malbork Castle is one of the largest examples of medieval
(brick based) fortifications in the Northern Europe. The castle
itself (not counting the medieval township which was adjusted to it)
used to occupy around 20 hectares. It was surrounded by four
subsequent defence walls, each one of them with numerous towers,
bastions, and deep moats full of murky water. The total length
of all its fortification walls amounted several kilometres.
Just for the intricity and the vastness of these huge and powerful
fortification structures, the castle is worth to be seen. Of course
various fortification features of this castle are surrouded
with mysteries and intrigues. An example is the Buttermilk tower,
which used to serve as a prison.

2. Medieval interior:
Inside of the Malbork castle a good reconstruction of medieval
architecture can be seen. There are towers, cloisters, corridors,
fortification walls, bastions, cellars, church, chapels and many more such unique features to see.

3. Museum of medieval armour:
Inside of the Malbork castle several separate museum exhibitions are located.
One of the most spectacular out of them, is the exhibition of medieval armour.
It is possible to see in it historic weaponry, about which we read in history
books. One can also see famous Damascean swords and other examples of unique
weaponry that belonged to famous warriors.

4. Museum of amber:
The Malbork castle is located near of amber bearing area.
Therefore it is natural that inside of it is located one of the most exquisite amber exhibitions. You can see in this exhibition examples of amber jevelery and art that you cannot see anywhere else in the world. It also containes several of the largest lumps of natural amber in existence.

5. Museum of medieval furniture:
Interior of the Malbork castle is equipped with a large number of replicas of medieval furniture. You can see medieval tables, chairs, cupboards, chests, cabinets, beds, etc. |
6. Medieval interior decorations:
Various parts of the Malbork castle are decorated according to original medieval patterns and style. One can see this decoration, which apart from the Malbork castle is very difficult to find. One can also see the original equipment of medieval kitchen with a dumbwaiter, as well as medieval central heating system.

7. Medieval ways of dealing with problem people:
An interesting part of the Malbork castle is its medieval toilet (latrine). This toilet was so designed, that people that were somehow inconvenient for the castle owners, were made to fall down from it around 25 meters, and kill themselves by the footing of a fortification wall. The remains of these people were then washed out by water from the moat. About the imprisoning system and torture chambers, that also were a vital part of the Malbork castle, there is no need to even mention (especially that now they are not open for tourists). |
8. Malbork as a centre of oppression:
From the social point of view, the mediveal empire of Teutonic
Knights, for which the Malbork Castle was a headquarter and the
capitol, was very unique. It was entirely ruled by several
hundred monks only, that belonged to the order of Teutonic Knights.
The number of these monks in convent used to change with time,
but it was somewhere between 6 and around 80 in one castle.
These monks created a steep pyramid of terror and oppression.
Due to this steep pyramid of oppressive hierarchy, these
several hundred monks actually rulled a huge country, of whom
which firstly Prusia, then Hitler Germany, and currently the
entire Germany, originate.

This is in the tower from this Cathedral that Nicolaus Copernicus completed his breakthrough atronomical discoveries (this tower is invisible on the above illustration, because is located beyond the left margin of the photograph).

9. Tours from the Malbork Castle:
While visiting Malbork and its castle, it is possible to arrange
various tours to see other local areas of interests. Each one of
these areas is well described in numerous internet sites. Therefore,
if you wish to learn more about any of them, you just need to call
a search engine (e.g. google.com), and then type for key
words the words highlighted in descriptions below. Such tours from
Malbork can take interested people, amongst others, to:
(1) The Order of the Teutonic Knights castles.
Apart from Malbork the Teutonic Order constructed over 70
fortified castles around the region, many of these in the
vicinity of Malbork. Some more interesting ones include:
Chelmno, Dzialdowo, Three castles of Olsztyn, Lidzbark Warminski
and Frombork (both these castles are historically significant
because of the research by the famous Polish astronomer
Nicolaus Copernicus), Karnity, Ketrzyn, Kwidzyn, Gniew, Reszel.
(2) The former German Concentration Camp Stutthof
on the Baltic Coast (about 43 km from Malbork). During the World
War 2 died around 85,000 prisoners in there. Still until today
one can see human ashes, a gas chamber, crematorium, etc.
(3) The Basilica Cathedral in Frombork.
It is from the tower of this cathedral, a famous Polish
astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus (19 Feb. 1473 -
24 May 1543) was making his important observation
which let to the formulation of his famous heliocentric theory
of planetary movements published in De
revolutionibus orbium coelestium (1543) - i.e. revolutions of
celestial bodies. There is even the tomb of Nicolaus
Copernicus in Frombork cathedral, unfortunately during the
Swedish invasion of Poland in 1626 and 1655, his grave was
desecrated, and now it remains empty.
(4) Famous Bunkers of Hitler's headquarters
called Wolf's Lair (or whatever is now left out of them).
These are located some 200 kilometres east from Malbork.
It is in them that the assassination attempt on Hitler
was carried out in the last stage of the World War 2.
Note that there is a wealth of information on Wolf's Lair in
Internet - just type the name of it in any search engine.
(5) The field of Grunwald battle (formerly
Tannenburg, spelled also Tannenberg),
where in 1410 the army of Teutonic Order was defeated
by the Polish king Wladyslaw Jagiello.

10. Castle centre for tourist services:
Around the Malbork castle a large complex of services for tourist is
formed. For example the castle itself has its own post office with
its unique supply of view cards and post stamps. It also has various
dining facilities. At the walking distance from the castle modern
hotels and restaurants are located. Some of them even advertise
themselves in the Internet. There are also various merchant areas
and shopping complexes, for example a local
flea market on which one can buy for bargen prices
even the most strange objects.
